California State University International Program Florence

California State University
SAB Meeting
Monday, October 11, 2010 in Director's office   12:00

       General

    Recording Secretary today: Anthony Fossi

    1. Academics:

      a. Overall, the meetings are going well
      b. One Italian class is going to change times, but should not affect any students
      c. If we plan on volunteering with Caritas or in some other way make sure we can fit it in the schedule, avoid conflicts, (we can make it work {we being…us as a collective SAB or the faculty?[Is this reminding anyone else of inception (sorry this is such a long note!)]}) and perhaps inform them of that schedule. Communication is always a good thing (and clarity in said or written communication {like this one? [ok, sorry I won’t do that again (or will I?)]}).
      d. Some conflicts with Sonoma-staters and having certain classes count, as proved through contact with the advisor. Most can still count for elective credit. I know as far as my school (Cal Poly, SLO {see I stopped sooner [oh gosh, did I? (Phew, I did).]}) goes, many of the classes count as professional electives, which is a portion many of us still need to complete.

    2. Group Events:

      a. Social Science 100 notes
          i. Due Monday Oct 18th by 17:00.
ii. Place in box in Refugio’s office that will serve as a collection point.
      b. Last week of plp.
      c. Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday are oral exams.
          i. Two teachers (one yours, plus one other).
ii. Appointments discovered via e-mail and bulletin board.
      d. Friday collective written exam.
      e. Italian Challenge, great success
          i. Fun even for non-participants just to go and watch.
ii. Great location (thank them once more please) and easy to get to.
iii. Most people were just there to cheer on school, so when we lost final was uneventful and most people left (fix the matches next time, go for the ankles!)
iv. Football lacked Italian connection as it was more competitive but volleyball and tennis were more open to socializing.
             1. Dinner afterward introduced us to some Italians who I would be interested in meeting again
             2. Connie mentioned they would be interested as well (Yay!) So continued interaction with Italians we did meet is a possibility.
          v. More warning on possible temperature shifts as most people left due to the cold, though it would have been nice to see more people for the final and the dinner (which was delicious).

    3. Architecture:

      a. Needs to meet with Valentina next Wed. 20 Oct. to at 11:00 to clean out Aula Arc C.
Would like more students to help.
          i. This task includes cleaning the rooms so we can have studio space. Show up so not all work is left up to her.
      b. Kayla, Abner and I must then come up with a random way of dispersing the students and assigning their studio spaces. c. Figure drawing Crits
          i. Tue 15:30-18:30
          ii. Thurs 17:30-20:30

    4. Studio Art:

      a. Results on Wednesday (gl everyone {good luck everyone})
      b. It’s been difficult for Studio Art students to catch up after missing a week for their exams. And their make-up class was hardly helpful as what they covered only helped a couple students who do have to make oral presentations.
          i. Luciano has been very understanding and received many high marks today in the meeting (yes, we grade the professors as well).
      c. Talk to Valentina about Art room spaces and protection of said space. Drop cloths or other methods of set up and anti-paint devices (APD’s).
      d. As you do not yet know your schedules with the jury still out, the question of how to register comes into play.
          i. Worry not, sign up for classes that interest you. There is still the grace period to add/drop classes and in most situations exceptions can be made for you guys as well to ensure you are in the best situation.

    5. Student Activities slash Affairs:

      a. Cooking class
          i. Positive feedback, everyone has so far enjoyed themselves.
ii. Talk to Paola to make appointments as it is still possible to organize one.
iii. However, this probably will not happen until the new semester begins.
iv. Paola needs group interest and details certain about 4 days ahead to properly warn other lady and organize. Payments to either Paola or… [insert nice cooking instructor’s name here].
      b. Caritas
          i. Still possible (already mentioned about staying in contact {These were further notes provided by Paola}). We are still wanted!
ii. Perhaps wait until schedule realized and set to provide accuracy.
      c. Presentations
          i. Connie and Elisabetta have to make a presentation on 15 November and needs our help. Spread the word to bring pictures in to Refugio via e-mail or flash drive that depict our lives here so far: our involvement with Italians, the Italian Challenge, our field trip, tasteful nightlife (keep it rated PG for the kids), studio art exams, calcetto games, Corri La Vita.
ii. Also, SAB members might be included in this presentation as it focuses on Learning Through Experience and how students get involved with the community.
      d. Next field trip 18 Nov
      e. Corri La Vita
          i. Good pictures and a great time.
ii. Impressive to see so many people and to be a part of that. Walking through Boboli gardens best part – general consensus.
iii. Difficult to move with such a crowd, do not plan on running the shorter “race.”
      f. School Volunteering
          i. Possible to teach English as an assistant in either an elementary or a middle school for one hour a week. This is a commitment, not an “I can show up once in a while thing.” Set schedules first so as not to create conflicts
ii. Linguistic and Cultural interaction: more exposure to communication, how children are brought up, how schools are run.
iii. Meet with teachers before lessons and see what is going on, then support them in the lesson, play with kids. Occasionally, turns into a private job where you may tutor one kid at home and entertain and teach simultaneously (think Kindergarten Cop)!
iv. Middle schools go late November to end of may
          v. Elementary schools go beginning of November to end of February.
      g. Also, if we come up with any ideas due to our vast desires, propose them. Stand and be heard, mmhmm.
          i. Not all activities can be free, but just give it a shot if you are interested.
ii. Michelle says “you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” Which she totally came up with all by herself.
iii. Example: student interested in leather making. Directed to leather school in Santa Croce to see what he/she can do.
      h. Maggio Card
          i. Get one.

    6. Meetings:

      a. Next one after Fall Semester begins in Nov.
      b. Have a great break!

    7. Otha (Other):

      a. We don got no note fer dis urea (we do not have any further notes for this section).
